Strange VISTA to XP conversion problem

I bought a Compaq Presario notebook, model CQ60z with VISTA basic. My spouse runs
a small business and uses a particular program for her orders and inventory. This
program will not run on VISTA (I found out after the fact). I ordered XP pro for
laptop and installed it. Her program runs perfectly!!!
The rest of the stuff, not so much. I no longer have sound and the display is very
funky. I also had no network. I had to buy a USB NIC device to get online. All
displays open or change with an effect similar to slowly pulling up or down a window
shade. Also, when I first turn on the PC, there are waves of different shades of
blue screen flowing across the screen from top to bottom. She can live with both,
but I can’t. I tried to “upgrade” or “downgrade” the display driver, with terrible
results. The driver is for NVidia 8200M, 32 bit xp. After the install, I got many
errors (most with that awful loud BEEP from the default PC sound device, not the
audio device that doesn’t work). I had to go back to a previous point via system
restore to get back to the original funky display.
When I called HP (Compaq), they said that I could not run XP on that hardware. They
said that I was out of luck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can at least get the display to work correctly?
BTW, the USB NIC also causes some slowdown of the pointer during online times, or
maybe that is part of the display problem.
Thanks in advance, TeamanFL
