Absolutely the first thing to do is to ensure all your own files are backed up. Initial signs are its a hard disk problem, but it could also be memory, overheating or a failing power supply. A few questions, to narrow down the possibilities: 1. Do you get that message (Checking the File System . . . ) if you shut down and re-start before it "freezes" ? 2. What is the main file system type ? To find out, do the following . . . a. Click on Start . . . Run b. Type the following and press Enter: diskmgmt.msc c. Let us know what it says for File System on the line called (C:) in the column Volume 3. What does your Event Viewer say ? To find out, do the following . . . a. Click on Start . . . Run b. Type the following and press Enter: eventvwr.msc c. Click on System and scroll down the list until you find an item with a red cross at about the time you had one of the "freezes". There may be several of these. d. Double click where it says Error and post back with the information in the grey box.
