I had the same problem after I removed a malfunctioning antivirus/spyware/etc. Dont'
know if the two were related. Tried disabling the pnp to no avail and then installed
the freebee 'RegCleaner' suggested by Peter. As it turned out, I too had two instances
of desktop running. Removed one (this time not the '(common user)') and had little
difference, BUT after I reinstated the pnp I had previously disabled and rebooting
a couple of times, everything came back except occasionally the the USB eject doesn't
show up when I have a USP drive installed at boot. Its definitely worth a try.
