I looked up the page you recommended. My drive turns out to be set to Ultra DMA, so I did not proceed further in this respect. Also, I did Defrag (with the built-in Windows utility) all the partitions before posting my problem. I had also run sfc /scannow and run both AVG and Spybot in Safe mode. Thanks again.
