Thank you for explaining things to me about hard disks. I did download Western Digital's 
disk check utility (mine is a WD hard disk) and have run it several times. No errors 
were reported. Nevertheless, I suspect the disk is the culprit, having been damaged 
in some way by the UPS crash. 

The machine (and the cable) is only a year old, and on one has opened the box during 
this period. Still I could buy a new cable and try it out.

As you will have read in  my  post of April 2, 9:20 pm, the slow imaging problem 
seems to have vanished, though I don't know why. So, at present, the only problems 
(event 11 and event 5) are when I log on or switch users. Otherwise the machine is 
not slow.
