Windows update auto-installed its XP set of April '09 updates a couple of days ago,
and suddenly I had a missing sound card. There was no audio device at all to be found
anywhere. Device manager showed no card, there were no audio drivers for it anywhere,
even SIW found no audio driver.
I run a dual-boot machine with Ubuntu, so I dropped into Linux and the audio was
perfect. So it wasn't the card, the bios or any speaker issue.
I uninstalled the updates, rolled back to a previous System Restore point, checked
all the audio services were enabled; nothing. After a few days of tearing my hair
out -- and having no sound in XP! -- I stumbled across the solution below, from six
years ago in this thread.
It worked perfectly.
I can't imagine why my PnP enumerator suddenly croaked, but hey, got to love Windows
Auto-Update.
I know that after doing this patch, some people have found that they got two Plug
and Play enumerators show up in the System Devices list and had to uninstall one
of them to get everything working, but I didn't have that at all.
So Snipe, many, many belated thanks for forwarding the post, and to you Carl, whoever
you may be, for the original solution!
