texfisk (way back in 2003) may have something there about XP booting so fast. I
just updated my system with 80 pin flat cables to gain higher UDMA rates. I was
stuck at UDMA 2 with the old cables. Now my HDD is running at UDMA 5 (ATA 100 vs
ATA 33). As soon as I did this, I began to have the problem others have experienced
here. I tried the RegCleaner fix, but my system has many apps in the Common User
startup and deleting that from my startup did not have the desired effect for me.
At this moment, I'm not inclined to change my flat cable back to see if the problem
goes away - maybe someday when I've a lot of time on my hands. But, my experience
just may provide someone with a bit more knowledge to help figure out how to properly
solve this problem.
