US keyboard to UK keyboard

I am in the UK and want a UK keyboard, as does a friend who has just phoned and asked
for help.
He found that shift + 2 gives him @ whereas the UK keyboard gives " for that combination.
He may have, inadvertently, pressed both shift keys and the alt key at the same
time to switch from UK to US keyboard.
I tried this on my Win XP laptop and changed my keyboard from UK to US. I could only
revert to the UK keyboard by rebooting.
Is there a keyboard short cut to reverse Shift + Shift + Alt to make a UK keyboard.
If you look in Control Panel nothing seems to have changed so the reversal cannot
be done there.
Any advice please?
