Hello
I find this very difficult to describe, don't know if
windows or post is at fault.
Have Compaq Presario approx. four years old running xp, basic system.
Computer starts by running a memory check screen
with the option to bypass this screen by pressing ESC,
also has option to press F1 to enter set up (bios).
When entering bios there is an option to turn on or off
the memory check screen - called diagnostic check -
This no longer functions, it is possible to select and
confirm, this does'nt happen, the memory check always runs. I believe this is part
of - POST.
Normally ESC is pressesd immediately the memory
scanning screen appears - NOT always does windows
move on and load, the green loading bars stop and
after ten minutes or so the desktop appears with no
icons or mouse icon, and goes no further.
When the memory check screen is allowed to run for
ten seconds or more pressing ESC always produces
the above results, the only way out of this is to press
the power button on front of computer, a re start will
invariably be successfull.
There are no indications from windows there is a
problem except on restart sometimes the "windows was not able to start - choose last
known configuration that worked
, or start xp normally" screen appears. Selecting start
windows normally always works.
Event viewer yields nothing informative. By using START UP in msconfig I was not
able to recreate the
fault.De select all items and slowly add them back.
How is it possible that by delaying the use of ESC affects the way windows loads,
or doesn't ? and
why can't I turn diagnostic screen on and off, and
what do you think is the cause and remedy for all of this ?
Regards bs.
