1. I do not think that BIOS option turns off the memory check, it simply hides it. 
If the "compaq" screen was deleted, it will not show (hiding the memtest). Does the 
option to turn on or off stick even though it does not work?
2. The ESC problem is a buffer (hardware). Try another keyboard. If it is not the 
keyboard, it is deeper in the machine. I suggest you just wait out the memory check.
3. There is a possibility your memory is bad, but I doubt it. Check at Compaq for 
diagnostics. Other memory tests are listed below.
