I assume you applied the changes, after you went into Sound and Audio devices and
checked 'show volume control', etc.
Try this registry fix, in the left column...
320. Restore Volume/Net Icon to Notification Area

FYI, if you don't know how to d/l and merge a registry file. Right click the link
above and choose Save link as, or Save target as (in IE). Save it to your desktop.
Double click the .REG file to merge the info. into your registry.
Some changes require a reboot, but I'm unsure whether this fix does. Post back and
let us know if that works, please.
