''setup was unable to format the partition. The disk is damaged. You must select 
a different partition for xp'' 

XP Setup is telling you that it thinks there is a problem with the hard disk drive.

Find out which company made the HDD, go to their website and download their disk 
diagnostic utility.  You might need a new HDD.

They seem to be failure-prone on laptops, IME.
