XP SP2 is about as good as it gets in terms of multicore usage under Windows, and neither the minor SP3 patch nor Vista make much noticeable difference :-( The key to higher performance from a multicore processor lies in the application software - if its not written to utilise multiple cores, there's not much the OS can do. That is to say, for most single-application uses, duo-core is of dubious benefit and quad-core is probably a waste of money right now. Curiously, forcing applications to spread their load across multiple cores can slow then down although running several separate applications at once may be faster. I'd pursue your question on a hardware forum which is where extreme performance is better covered than here I think. We largely concentrate on making the damn thing work at all !
