To update or not to update that is the question.  It's a matter of opinion as mentioned. 
Regardless of what browser you use there are some patches you should probably have. 
Nature of the beast - M$ products. A good compromise is to manually select updates 
you the user deem necessary. Some research on particular patches may be needed on 
your part... but IMO if your going to update this is the best way to do it. You should 
never let windows automatically download every patch M$ comes out with . Doing so 
tends to lead problems and unwanted software on your system.

If you want to update using Firefox you can use this site  http://windizupdate.com/ 
 I actually prefer this site over M$ update, gives more info on the patches.
