The different capacitors are a result of the board revision I spoke of. The original
components did not match up with other components reliably. More likely, the vendor
supplied unreliable components. On boards where the component tolerances vary too
much, you get slight damage, then more damage ... then failure.
Unless you have a VERY cheap UPS, it did no damage (except, of course, the system
corruption); Most are designed to kill themselves before overpowering (spiking) your
pc. The brownout may have caused a spike through the phone/cable/ethernet, but you
usually "see smoke" in that situation.
The disk controller on the HDD may have been slightly damaged or it may be more sensitive.
We will probably never know for sure. But I think it is okay. If you do not get an
RMA with the new disc, keep that one for data.
