1st: I had this problem after reinstalling an nvidia driver, and I suspect the problem
is caused by some change to a driver, etc, that has a system tray icon associated
with it. I suspect this problem is associated with some recent change give us in
an XP update. (I use XP Pro SP3 32bit)
Here's what worked for me: I simply went to my control panel and turned the nvidia
system icon off then back on. I did the same for the one other I can easily control:
my soundcard driver. By re-enabling these two, then restarting, ALL my icons, not
just these two, reappeared as they should.
I should note that before I tried the above, I did try the idea higher up on this
thread of killing explorer using task manager, then restarting it. However, I don't
believe that step is necessary to make the fix. Just try re-enabling some icons and
restarting. If it doesn't work, then try killing explorer, restarting it, then re-enabling
some or as many icons as you have control over, then restarting. But again, I don't
think you need to do the kill explorer step.
I'd be interested in knowing if this works for anyone besides me. So please reply
back!
