One of my computers has had this problem for over 12 months now and I have tried
all of the above but no luck. I came across a tip from the guys at TechRepublic.
To view the orignal you'll need to logon and go to http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/itdojo/?p=731&tag=nl.e101.
Basically I had to add the environment variable devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and
set it to 1 (one).
Then go into the device manager and select "Show Hidden Devices". This now will
display non-present devices. If it's not present then the device looks greyed out.
Under the Sound, video & game controllers I had a heap of these devices, some were
doubled up other I had four of. I uninstalled all these devices.
When I rebooted I had that sweet sweet sound.
Hope this helps somebody.
