You can control which updates are offered, but only if you're willing to Update manually.

First uninstall any M$ update you do not want, then go to Windows Update and wait
till the update Scan is complete. You'll be offered "EXPRESS" or "CUSTOM" Install.

Select the "CUSTOM" button and you'll see the available Updates in List form. On
any Update you do NOT want, un-tic the Box, click on the "+" and locate the option;
"Do not show me this again".

Leave the check marks only in the desired updates and install what you want.

You will not see the de-selected updates again. Unfortunately, I do not know if this
affects "Auto-Update" but then, I'm with Steve on disabling Automatic Updates.

It's rather difficult to blame M$ when you've given them permission to install most
anything they want by allowing Automatic Updates.

Implied Consent?
