Can you try another monitor to see if it still happens? That would be the first
thing to try troubleshooting. Usually the result of electrical spiking/surging either
from the side of the powersupply (AC or DC side) or hitting the computer hardware
through the monitors cable. It has nothing to do with software. CRT monitors are
more prone to cause issues than are LCD monitors.
In some cases I have seen a weak or unstable (overly sensitive) powersupply do this,
but in any case, something is hitting the motherboard or the powersupply that is
causing a power disruption/instability. It is also possible that the motherboard
is a little unstable, so it doesn't take much to upset it. Power variations from
the PSU can cause voltages to the motherboard to drop out of spec, which will cause
an immediate failure. When you don't see anything in the Event Viewer as far as
an unidentified problem that Windows restarted from, it is 99% certian that it is
a hardware issue, since Windows isn't able to write an event to the log.
