In the Device Manager, do you have problem devices? You will probably find that
you are missing some device and motherboard drivers in this case. Any missing drivers
will have to come from HP who now owns/supports Compaq. If additional drivers are
not available for XP, then there won't be anything you can do. Windows can't identify
hardware if it isn't in the Windows install database, or if the hardware is incompatible.
You might try a Compaq forum. Someone might have run across the same issue and
have a solution or know of drivers that will work.
PCMCIA can be particularly troublesome as the technology and hardware changed for
the slots. If the add hardware wizard doesn't work, you will have a harder time
trying to solve the problem. If it isn't even listed in the device manager, then
you have a real issue that won't be easily solved, or maybe not solved at all. You
may well have to return to Win 9X on this machine. The same issues for older machines
have come up here in the past (about a lack of drivers) and in some cases, the only
solution was to return to the operating system that the machine originally came with.
