I've used various registry cleaners for years, and it's never caused me a problem. Those that do, are probably scams to begin with. Performance isn't the point, but all that useless garbage collecting in the registry can cause corruption over a period of time. Plus, the registry gets bloated with all that useless junk, 'specially if you install/uninstall a lot of programs. It's a matter of personal preference, like anything else.
