Have you scanned for malware?
try googling the problem first ( lost icons), next look at your Startup programs
( RUN command, msconfig, look under startup tab) If you see program names with random
characters, it might be malware.
I can suggest several malware programs: Trojanremover, malwarebytes, super antispyware
otherwise try one of the malware forums like Hijack this ( they offer a small program
to look inside your registry to print out a report)
