Software either works or it won't. If it gets corrupted, then either other software
has conflicted with it, or there is hardware at fault causing corruption.
In this case, IME, you have an intermittent hardware issue (more common on these
software modems than you would think). I've seen many times that a reboot will get
a piece of defective hardware working, and then not on the next reboot, if it doesn't
stop when it finally does start working. Laptops are especially prone to hardware
issues by their very nature. (heat/vibration/shock etc). HDD's also can currupt
data if not saving or loading and injecting errors when it is read from the same
area of the HDD, and if your driver is located in that region of the drive, you end
up with issues that can come and go. So I would check the drive also as well as
do a memory test on the RAM. Acer I believe has a diagnostics utility that you can
run from the HDD. Check the documentation to see how to run it. It will check the
hardware.
I would hope there is a warranty on it and call Acer. Older systems would have conflicts,
but on todays machines with properly designed BIOS and hardware, you should never
get a conflict unless you have added a piece of ill designed software/hardware.
I have not been impressed with Acer for some years now. Better than they use to
be, but not good enough IMO. See what they say about your issue and see how fast
they pass the buck onto Windows from my experience...
