graphics card problems

hello, I've had the most terrible string of graphics card issues today. It all started
with:
1) I'm going about my business when a message pops saying new hardware GeForce 6800
has been detected... which is puzzling because its already installed, and has been
for months.
2) My computer promptly crashes
3) I restart, and get the message "Unsupported Mode" on my monitor, I take out my
gfx card, and boot off my intergrated graphics, works fine. I try various workarounds,
but I can't get my GeForce to work with my monitor (a compaq 7020 flatpanel). I proceed
to...
4) Reformat, to no avail, in fact after the reformat, I no longer get the "Unsupported
Mode" message, and instead my monitor just doesn't turn on at all (with the GeForce),
and remains in sleep mode.
5) I tried putting in another gfx card, a radeon 9800, and it works seemingly...
until I discover I can no longer change my resolution! I can change it under display
settings, but no matter what i change it to, the actual resolution doesn't change
and remains on a 1280x1024 setting.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated, I need to get my GeForce working again.
