I'm having this problem on a Dell Optiplex SX280 micro tower. I tried the sfc /scannow
but it wants a windows CD. Problem is the slimline sony dvd-rom doesn't read cd's
or dvd's anymore.
I swapped both 512mb sticks of pc2-3200 ram with a different brand of pc2-4200 ram,
and still the problem persists. With two new sticks of ram, I don't see it possibly
being a memory problem.
I have a 1gb usb stick, can I copy the XP CD to it on my good computer and use that?
I'll give it a shot.
I did a chkdsk and also a defrag, no difference. I combed through the RunOnce, and
msconfig startup items, an also checked winlogin\notify to make sure no spyware/trojans/viruses
were loading that way. I removed some crappy toolbars with Hijack this, and Norton
AV Gaming Edition does not detect any viruses.
Another thing, it's just genuinely slow for a P4 3 GHz and 1 GB of ram. It has a
Maxtor 160GB SATA hard drive in it with 112 GB of free space. Windows XP Service
Pack 3 and all Windows updates except for IE8. The latest Dell Bios version A08
is installed.
