I tried all the suggestions in here. Reregistering the DLLS at least let me reboot
the machine in Safe mode without it immediately crashing and rebooting during the
boot-up, which it was doing.
But I cannot delete the catroot2 folder. Windows insists some of the files in it
are corrupted and it won't let me delete them.
I tried running chkdsk, but it says the volume can't be mounted in exclusive mode,
even though I am the Administrator and even in Safe mode, it says this.
I have run tools from malwarebytes.org, and spybot search and destroy, and did an
ipconfig /flushdns
That got rid of the spyware/malware thing that got in here that started all this,
so at least the barrage of popup boxes has stopped and Yahoo searches aren't redirected
anymore.
I just wanted to rerun the Win XP SP2 installer and then let Windows to all its auto
updates, but I can't run the SP2 installed becuase of this stupid .inf thing.
