A short sounds right to me as well.  I had a usb wireless that would crash the computer 
whenever I inserted it.  The port is allocated 500ma of power, which is to be divided 
among all usb items, and the wireless was pulling all 500 by itself.  My new wireless 
pulls only 100 and I no longer have a problem.
