nhazean Your reply may be a few years late for the original poster but it was just
in time for me. Clicking the Advanced tab made all the difference. In my case after
having all the same symptoms as everyone else I tried deleting the extension, in
my case xlr, from the file list in folder options. The deletion worked but I couldn't
get a new file association by the usual means (right clicking a file to get Open
With etc). By opening the file associations list from a folder and then clicking
add and then clicking Advanced I got the options I needed to list xlr as a new extension
and associate it as an Open Document Spreadsheet to be opened with scalc in Open
Office. I still don't know what causes the infuriating glitch in the first place
but at least it's solved, thanks to nhazean . Many thanks.
