Next time mark the check box at the bottom of the screen to preserve spacing.
The procedure makes no sense to me. I would agree with your assessment; however the 
one from the repair folder may not produce acceptable results, depends on how old 
it is. 

In the future, you should look into erunt for making backups of your registry and/or 
look into disk imaging software.
