Why don't you try again, from scratch, but this time WITHOUT loading your antivirus
program. It sounds like that might be what's interfering with the update installations....it
certainly wouldn't be the first time. If the updates all work fine without the
antivirus program installed, I'd ditch that particular antivirus package, in favor
of the (free) antivirus/antimalware download from Microsoft, which you can find by
googling for Microsoft Security Essentials. To avoid getting "stung," just don't
go to any websites (other than Microsoft's) prior to completing all your updates
and the installation of Security Essentials.
