I'm experiencing the same problem on a new XP system from Dell. At first I thought it was the result of a virus, but a virus scan revealed nothing. I called Dell and they said "they would get to the bottom of this", which meant for them going to control panel, sounds, and turning of the exclamation sound. So, I'm living with this problem and very curious about why it's happening.
