I certainly have a fine mess this time around!
Beginning last night the problem computer wouldn't boot; upon physical start the
motherboard would put up it's splash screen ( as normal ); screen goes to black,
and stuff in the computer ( like a hard drive or fan ) would stop running for a second
or two. Stuff starts running again; text on screen stating Windows did not start
up or shut down properly, blah blah blah. Menu options to start Windows in various
safe modes, last know good config, or normal start. All choices gave the same result:
mobo splash screen, computer goes quiet, back to start up options.
Removed boot hard disk, temporarily replaced with old drive that has Linux. Linux
goes through a long boot process, up to a login prompt, then screen goes blank.
For yesterday and today, in the bios, the voltage outputs for the power supply are
a bit low; about 11.7-11.8 for the 12, 4.8 for the 5, 2.8 for the 3. Not sure if
it was always like this or recent.
Power supply removed, new one installed.
Computer booted with Linux drive in; results similar to earlier result with Linux
drive and old power supply.
Regular hard drive ( Windows ) reinstalled; hard drive light goes on but no signal
is going to the monitor!
Celeron processor, 2Ghz
Win XP Home, SP 2
Regular hard drive is Seagate, around 20 Gig cap
Secondary drive is Western Digital, another 20 Gig cap
Mobo is ASUS P4VP-MX
