Thanks for your suggestion.  

Trying this certainly produced some interesting results, but I wasn't able to reproduce 
the scenario I wanted.  I tried 5 times - I reset the computer rather than powering 
it off to spare my hardware that stress.  Between some cycles I had restore the disk 
image from my Windows Home Server to clear the corruption caused by these trials.

Before this I tried tweaking every registry key related to Adobe Reader, in all areas 
of the registry, even renaming installation files everywhere, but couldn't reproduce 
the scenario.  

I'm giving up.
