In the old days (when DOS was a baby), routines could be inserted that would be triggered by the hardware keyboard interrupt. Something similar would be universal. Keep a stack of words similar to HP calculators then pass along those words if matching first few letters appeared. I don't know if that is still feasible with today's fancy OS's.
