XP won't recognize Old XP Drive on same computer

Primary (c:/) drive just faded away so I bought a new one. Previously, used two
hard drives, both WD Caviars, SATA (perhaps sata II?). Reinstalled XP on the new
drive and now XP won't read the old WD Caviar, which I had all my work on. I reformatted
the new drive before I installed xp, but not the old one.
XP recognizes my old drive, but claims it is not formatted. Obviously, I don't think
i want to format it, but what to do? Here is what I do know.
Everything seems ok in the bios files. Auto detect etc.
Using a evga nforce 680i LT SLI Mobo
intel dual core
plenty of ram etc.
All the posts on this matter I can find describe XP not even recogizing an old drive,
but I can see it in My Computer, I just cannot read it because XP thinks it is not
formatted.
Any help appreciated.
