Sarge:
In reply to your last post, I cannot recall any event that damaged either drive.
I had no indication anything but my c:/ drive was causing problems. Here is a more
detailed post I put up on another site.
I run XP on the following:
evga nforce 680i LT SLI
Intel Core 2 8500
800mhz memory
2x 500gb WD Caviars 7200 rpm.
I used one Caviar, we will call it the "Old C:/" for programs and windows. I used
the second for data ("F:/").
The Old C: started having problems and causing my video to stutter, sound to stutter
etc. It had been a few years since I built this computer so I thought I would just
do a clean install of XP on the Old C:/. XP didn't like the old c:\ and I couldn't
reformat or install XP on it. After fighting it for an afternoon I just bought a
new drive.
Installed XP on the new drive and no problems. One thing however, my data f:/ drive
that I kept all my files on was now the C:/ drive and my new drive was now the F:/
drive. I found this strange as I did not delete the partition of the F:/ drive or
format it during the windows install. I am almost dead certain of this because I
was very worried I would select the wrong drive and do so.
Most important, I could not access the files in my old data drive, and XP wanted
me to format it. I did not.
Having just enough knowledge to be dangerous around computers without being confident.
I simply unplugged my old f: drive and reinstalled windows on my new drive. No problems
installing, the new drive was now the C:\ and my data drive was back to f:\. Still
couldn't access the f:\ drive. XP still says: "The disk in drive F is not formatted."
Here is what Computer Management tells me:
1. F:\ is healthy and active. It is Disk 1, Layout is a Partition, Basic Type, but
the File System is Blank. File system is "Raw" and there are 0 bytes on both the
used space and free space allocation. There is no file system (no NTFS indication).
I checked the Bios and it is all set to auto detect, so no problems likely there
in the sata controller. Besides, the new drive works just fine.
To reiterate, as this is not the typical XP recognition problem, I have no problem
accessing this drive, Windows just doesn't want me to access the files because it
doesn't think it is formatted.
Here is what I did that did not work:
1. Unplugged the sata cables and switch them as I cannot recall if I put the right
one back to the right drive, but I am not optimistic this will matter.
2. Took the data f:\ drive out to see if it will work in my old Dell. Same problem
in that Windows thougth the drive wasn't formatted.
So would be grateful if anyone has any theories.
Best,
Todd
