The drive is damaged or more likely, corrupted. That's why Windows thinks it isn't
formatted. Corruption can happen for no understandable reason at all, at least to
us humans. At this point, you need recovery software to see if anything can be rescued.
IME, it will be a waste of time trying to do anything else. There are many recovery
utilities/programs around, some better than others.
I've tried almost all of the free ones with mixed results depending on how bad the
damage is. I use the software from here: www.atl-datarecovery.com It is try before
you buy so you can see if anything can be recovered. Some of the free ones will
work to but I don't get into referring those as they can also do more damage sometimes.
