Hi Guys,
I had a major problem after re-installing Windows XP Home, NO AUDIO!
After weeks of researching what the problem could be on sites like this one, I was
still without sound. Running a Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149
laptop, I soon found that a whole range of causes could be responsible for the loss
of sound.
It drove me half mad! After weeks of slogging away downloading drivers for both Toshiba
and XP and re-installing the OS several times, the solution was much simpler than
I had been led to believe. My original copy of XP was illegal I discovered. Plus
I was using the disk version of XP rather than a laptop OEM file, which had been
originally pre-installed on the laptop's HD. I only discovered this while looking
on the base/back of the laptop for the part number. Next to the number I recognized
a small sticker displaying the Microsoft Windows XP logo-and in tiny print a legitimate
Product Key. After copying down the Key and typing it in, still no good, Windows
claimed it was invalid! So I completely erased the laptop's hard drive by installing
a linux OS. I then 'acquired' a Toshiba OEM file and burnt it to disk. The OEM installed
smoothly without a hitch. Typing in the Product Key was a joy, it worked first time.
Upon visiting the Microsoft Windows Validation page, EUREKA! the 'Thank You For Using
WGS' message appeared. I immediately went to the correct page and registered the
product. After restarting the machine I visited the Toshiba Home page, selected the
laptop model and downloaded the highlighted sound driver. Unlike previous attempts,
the driver installed smoothly! Restarting the computer once more, the sweet sound
of the Windows startup 'jingle' filled the room!
