Now that's interesting.
These are data which CHDSK has partially or completely recovered from dead disk sectors,
and it suggests that your HDD is having some significant problems.
I'd find and download the manufacturer's diagnostics to see what state it is on.
It is just possible that you have stumbled on the cause of the "disappearing (reported)
space" issue.
As for the DIR00000 files, they could be vital, or not (that doesn't help much !).
To find out what they are you need to guess (from the date, size, any missing files
etc - use what clues you can get) and try renaming the file extension to see if a.
you are right and b. you can open them.
But I'd leave this for the moment whilst you investigate the health of your HDD.
