Recovery console + empty Admin password?

Hello I used Clonezilla to save the XP partition #1 into an image file in partition #2, then played with Linux, and now I'd like to restore XP into partition #1. Problem is, the MBR is gone, so the PC won't boot. I booted with the XP CD, chose "Recovery" to launch the console so I can type "fixmbr"... but I'm prompted for the Administrator password... which is empty: When installing XP, I just hit Enter at this stage, then create a "Joe" account. I tried both (hitting Enter, typing the password for Joe), to no avail. Does someone know why XP won't accept any of this, and what to do? Thank you.
