I also need to thank everyone in this thread...
I was getting frustrated with startup hangs and with the extremely odd disappearance
of a volume icon in the tray. I traced my problem to kaspersky, my anti-virus, and
when I turned off the auto startup on kaspersky my volume icon re-appeared. I did
not like that option however, and it did not fix my startup hangs. I tried uninstalling
network services as advised in previous posts, and POOF!! like magic, my icons came
back, kapersky is on autostart, and my startup time went from 45 seconds to just
under 18. Literally the instant my desktop appears i can begin working, I don't even
have to wait for kaspersky to load anymore before the hour glass disappears. (I have
a ssd, thus the abnormally fast boot). ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL.
p.s. my home network (3 comps, 1 printer, wii) still works the same as before, if
not more responsive!
