Compressed (Zipped) Folder Corrupt

I had dozens of files stored in a zip file (using Winzip) and they were password protected. When I left my employer they let me keep the laptop but removed all licensed software, including Winzip. The zip file now showed as a compressed folder. However, I was never asked for a password when I tried to open the files. So, to re-protect them, I used the File menu (while in the folder) to remove the old password, which worked ok. However, I went to add a new one to protect these files and a few new ones added, when I got the error: The Compressed (Zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted. The compressed folder has disappeared as have all the files that were in it. If I try to use the Forward arrow in Explorer to back to the file, I get the same error. I can't find the folder using the commad line either. Where has it gone and how do I get it back? I really need the files!!!
