The bad news is that a corrupt zipped archive/folder is almost if not impossible
to repair even if it can be recovered. There is just to much damage under compression.
Second is that as soon as the issue is encountered, the machine needs to be shutdown
immediately so that further writing to the disk is stopped. You can then run recovery
software from the command prompt or DOS to see what can be recovered.
At this point if the machine were on my bench, I would in 99.999% of cases be telling
the customer, that their data was gone.
Lastly, compression should never be used without uncompressed backups. It should
never be your only source of data. Compressed files are more likely than uncompressed
data to become corrupted and unrecoverable IME. I see it all the time when trying
to recover peoples hard drives.
The good news? If you manage to recover and get any of your data back, head to the
nearest lottery machine and play your favorite numbers. You just might be lucky
enough to win!! :-)
As far as recovery software, I use professional software for best success. I don't
use the free ones as they can do more damage (as reported on this forum with some
of them) and you never want Windows running when trying to recover data in this scenerio.
There are some Linux based options that won't install anything on the HDD but they
do have a learning curve that most people just don't want to, or have the time to
deal with.
Software from the site below let's you see if you can find what you want to recover
before buying, if it can find anything:
