The computer would go into standby but the fans remained on. Everything worked fine before. There were no settings in the BIOS on the ASUS A7V8X that seemed to make any difference so I'm baffled why changing the BIOS battery caused the problem. Anyway I fixed it in the Windows Control Panel > Power Options section. By changing the Power Scheme to "Portable / Laptop" (even though I have a desktop) the fans will now go off. I changed some of the timer settings for turning off monitor or hard disks but these made no difference to the fans fortunately.
