Thank you all after the many years this thread has been around for helping me find a solution to this very same problem.

Last month, I bought a new keyboard (USB) to replace the old one (non-USB) I had which died after many years.  At that time, I began having problems with the fans staying on when I put the system into Standby.  I tried a bunch of different things, some of which were due to other, unrelated problems I was having with my system.

I also saw that I had a lot dust building up inside my system which I though was the problem.  I cleaned out the dust (a good thing, of course) but that did not keep the fans quiet.

But I suspected it had something to do with the new keyboard.  The mouse was an optical one (USB) I had been using since 2002, the same year I got the old keyboard.  The problem was indeed the fact that I had checked those boxes being able to take the system out of Standby.  But what could I do if I unchecked those boxes; how could I actually GET the sytem out of Standby without pressing the power button which had also been giving me some minor problems over the years?

I happened to have a spare mouse, one which was not USB.  I simply plugged it into its PS/3 port (and rebooted the system), giving me two active mouses (mice?).  Now, I could safely uncheck the take-out-of-Standby boxes on the the USB mouse and USB keyboard while using the PS/3 mouse to take the system out of Standby without using the power button.  Because the PS/3 mouse is used for only this purpose, I don't need to keep it in an easily accessible area, just nearby so I can left-click once on it to bring the system out of Standby, like an on-off switch.  Pretty clever, huh?

But again, I would like to thank all of you who contributed to this fascinating thread which nudged me in the right direction so I could have my system go into and out of Standby as it did before, enabling me to have peace and quiet without using the shaky power button.
