Did you read all the posts in this very old thread? To my mind, even in standby mode the pc is still "alive" rather like a TV set on standby so some parts are using energy (such as the power supply) and will get warm, so need to be cooled. To really shut the pc down, it needs to be shut down (!) or go into "hibernation" which is one step beyond standby and akin to a total shutdown. Cheers Spexx.
