I am a computer hardware technician and can tell you that cleaning the contacts
of your memory with a pencil eraser is a bad idea. It is best to use an ink eraser
(the white/gray ones). The pink pencil erasers contain oils that can cause more
problems. They may initially fix your problem, but the oils can cause more corrosion
over time and give you more grief later.
As for the 8E stop error, I think it is best to check your memory. Many 8E stop
errors are related to memory. This can be related to the video card in that if you
have a video card that has onboard memory, it could be the onboard memory giving
you the problems. Those with integrated video (video on the motherboard) usually
share system memory with the integrated video device.
For those with onboard video, start by removing memory sticks one at a time and
testing the system with EXACTLY what you were doing when the error occoured. If
the problem stops, clean the memory stick and re-test, and replace the suspect memory
stick if it continues.
For those with a video card, try a different video card, and replace as necessary.
SO MANY TIMES I hear people say, "well it was working fine for a long time, and
I didn't change anything." There are many factors that can cause hardware to die.
Power surges/spikes, humidity, dust, age, you name it. You just have to troubleshoot
and fix it, which isn't always easy.
Hope some of that helps.
