Question about 'Making Sure the Correct HAL is Installed'

Hmm. This didn't work too well for me. XP went and did a parallel installation. Result? A brand-new desktop, registry and a hard-drive full of applications which no longer worked. The problem to resolve is how to make WinXP install under the same path as my old windows directory, so you don't end up with application data referencing \WIN98 when it needs to be \WINDOWS. Rather a nightmare, I feel. I'm about to try the NTBACKUP save system state option, but I'm sure I'll end up with a Windows system-root directory mismatch problem.
