Further to my notes on this, I forgot to mention that you can select from a menu
to force the type of HAL to be installed by pressing the hidden F5 option when the
message "Press F6 to install a third-party disk driver" (or somesuch) appears when
installing XP. F7 here forces the installation of the standard HAL.
There is another note about ACPI settings in BIOS setups that relates to this subject
at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prdh_dmt_odlv.asp.
Briefly, this states (surprisingly but correctly) you should ALWAYS set "PnP OS"
to NO in any BIOS. If you want to know the reasoning behind this, read the article
noted above.
Last but not least, if you rummage around on the XP or 2000 CD, (in support tools,
I think) there's a utility that can be run under ANY version of Windows, that will
check your system to see if it is truly ACPI compliant.
