Why don't Desktop folders remember their 'View'?

My annoyance appears to be related; spacing and location of Desktop items is remembered,
but the contents of all my Desktop folders are often being changed from 'Icon' view
to 'List' view. It appears to happen at random, some nights never but others a number
of times.
I installed XP lean and mean. I use the 'Classic' look desktop, all programmes are
accessed from the Desktop via a Shortcut or folder. I have nothing in 'Start', 'Programs',
etc. I'll arrange programmes etc within each Desktop folder to be in 'Icon' view,
and without telling XP otherwise (wittingly) the next time I might open any desktop
folder they are all displayed in 'List' view.
I feel it might be 'Explorer' related as I access it via a Desktop Shortcut and my
view within Explorer is 'List'.
I cannot find any preference setting within XP where I can tell it that I want a
'List' view within Explorer but an 'Icon' view for my Desktop folders. I am aware
I am able to apply either to everything.
Apologies if I have missed something simple, I did not encounter this one with '98'
and a couple of nights at MS's site shed no light ... and I'm starting to get really
pissed off having to rearrange the furniture most times I fire up this box.
Regards,
Chris Upton.
